Herbal Stress Management
Herbs can be highly effective in the management of stress. They can be used to relax, restore and to strengthen the nervous system. It is a good idea to replace tea and coffee with herbal teas such as: Camomile, Lemon balm or Lime blossom (relaxing) or Peppermint (stimulating). The caffeine found in tea and coffee acts as a stimulant by prolonging the action of adrenalin and other hormones. This has the effect of using up the bodies stores of energy without replenishing them, and can cause or aggravate problems such as PMT and Migraine.
Stress relieving herbs include relaxants like the relaxing teas above and stronger herbs such as: Valerian, Passion flower, and Cramp bark all of which can be used to reduce tension in the mind and body. (If you are taking prescription medicines, of course, you should consult a qualified herbalist) Herbs and essential oils can also be used in the bath and to scent the room, the aromatic effect and the soothing action of a warm herbal bath can go a long way toward reducing the effect of stress. (Care should be taken with dilution of essential oils, and several should be avoided in pregnancy)
The traditional bowl of porridge for breakfast is a valuable nerve tonic, Oats being a powerful trophorestorative, and can help set you up for a stress free day.
